I have a 57' Chevy 3100, shortbed, stepside. I want to swap the rolling chasis with a newer model chasis. Will an 84'-85' short-wide chasis work for my truck or would you recommend a better chasis idea? The suspension under it now has (not original) 4x4 components. It is not a NAPCO truck but the previous owner wanted a 4x4. Thanks for the assistance.
I have a 1951 Chevy 3100 and put a front clip from a 1976 Camaro, though later models will also work. The rear will swap out for almost anything that has the correct axle width (Chevelle, Camaro, etc). The Camaro front clip was cheap and gave it modern steering, easy driving, and great handling. Replacing the rear axle typically requires that you remove the leaf springs and turn them around (front to back), so the tire position is correct. If you want to soften the ride, you can remove one leaf, but this also reduces your payload a bit, though the original 1/2 ton rating was obviously very conservative. The steering column I went with was a tilt column from an Impala. It was pretty much an easy bolt in, with only minor modification.
