Guys,
1957 GMC 100 relatively stock, still has original steering setup. I need to know if the steering is affected adversely by ??? Kingpin issues? steering box wear? I am 6 feet 225 lbs and I can barely turn the thing.

I'd venture to say most of your problem is likely the kingpin bushings . At least , that's where I would start . Good luck !

so, i rebuilt the front end with new kingpins, and Redline Synthetic grease. i am now in the process of finishing the hubs with new tapered roller bearings. I have had the hubs sandblasted, just need some advice or tips on how best to coat or paint the hubs before they go back on....????

When you get it togather have the caster checked , If one side is different then the other it can be hard to steer. mike

If you have an issue with the caster on a straight axle you have a problem! It could only mean the axle is twisted or someone has put a wedge shaped shim between the axle and spring on one side or the other.

When i rebuilt the spindles/kingpins i noticed that the axle had pads or steel shims/spacers between the axle and springs. they were both identical and i replaced them exactly how they were before dis-assembly. I have pictures, but i dont seem to be able to post them...

hey guys,
Anyone know what is needed to mount an alternator on the cast iron manifolds that were used in the 50's and 60's?

there are alternators that come in generator cases to replace the generators.. so it becomes a bolt on without any bracket changes..

i am taking that you still have the 347 pontiac motor that the V8 57 GMC pickups came with

perhaps some of the gmc parts suppliers might have something other than the chevy bolt on brackets in their catalogs..

if your charging system has failed...

generators can be rebuilt easily...

voltage regulators are still available ...

and how to polarize the generator after changing either the battery, generator or regulator.

if you have had the battery disconnected for any time at all.. you will probably want to start with repolarizing the charging system...   i will have to look around for that info.. . i don't have it in this computer..

Thanks Wayne,
I should clarify... the 347 is long gone before I got the truk  right now I have the chevy 305 from '78 and it has the long chevy water punp... I want to go to a short water pump with the alternator on the drivers side mounted to the old rams head manifold.
