exterior door handles 1973 chevy p/u

I just bought new exterior door handles for my 1973 chevy c10 pickup. I have the original manual but the installation instructions are vague as to how to install the rod to the handle assembly. They mention a view hole on the door exterior so the clip can be removed but I do not have one on my truck. I'd appreciate any directions. Thanks.  

I read this in the Haynes Manual
I think they're talking about the glass slot that glass extends and retracts from. Notice on page 308 that it says "(see section 12 paragraph 3)" On page 307 that section and paragraph talks about the glass slot.
Back on page 308 Fig. 12.15 shows in bold on top of caption that "access for rear clip removal "with glass in full down position"
I don't take it as a slot in the exterior of the inner or outer door skins.

Here's a novel idea! pay attention as to how you take the original handle off, then you'll know the new one goes back on, The clip is for retaining the lock assy. in the door.  This job is easier to do with the window in the up position.
