4" on each side doesn't seem to extreme to me. If you like the '98 Silverado seat go ahead and put it in. Make some extention plates out of some 1/4" plate. If you have to punch through the floor and make up some 2 or 3 inch round fender washers and stand offs out of pipe if needed. Keep your bolt sizes the same or larger. Try to utilize as best possible the floors reinforcement points. The floor can always be repaired and filled if you change back later. Keep in mind the seat belts. Do they bolt to the floor? I'm sure that '98 seat is a much better sit to ride around in. I put some 6 way heated charcoal leather volvo buckets in my '57 the tracks lined up good with the floor cross reinforcements. In fact 3 out of four bolt holes lined up. My old '57 bench is in the garage attic if anyone needs one. (for a fee of course) Go for it...Good Luck!
