If I'm not mistaken, there is a lower tube that goes into the block that sticks about about an inch and a half to two inches into the pan, alongside the third center main cap. It could possibly be bent below the pan rail of the block, therefore not letting the dipstick go all the way down into the upper tube. I hate to say this, but the only to know this for sure is to remove the oilpan and check it out. You might get lucky and be able to straighten it out without breaking it. If you can't save it, you can still get one from any Chevy dealer. It should be the same for any small block Chevy up till 78 or 79, when GM got stupid and switched it over to the other side. GOOD LUCK!

I tend to go along Smurfys line. There are several cofigurations for small block Chevs, I'm not super clued on what year is what. I have come across problems before with people changing the stick and siliconing up holes and trying to fit a different pan.Make sure yours is the right set up for that year. Otherwise you may have to do what Smurf mentioned and remove the pan, probably to find some idiot has filled the hole or something. Take the easy route first.

thanks for all the info i need to clarify that this is a 1965 chevrolet 327 engine it is somewhat modified so i have a moroso wetsump pan on the engine i have replaced the oil stick guide . i have tried the sae dipstick but it seems like the hole in the block where the dipstick tube is suppose to be is larger that the dipstick tube. i have the lokar installed now is it possible there is too much of a bend in the lokar dipstick tube to prevent the dipstick from going into it.is there a incorrect angle .or correct angle

Welcome to the world of aftermarket products, you are just opening up your own can of worms. This is what I deal with all the time, modifying parts to fit the new configuration.Maybe you want to run in reverse and put the right amount of oil in the motor and run the dipstick down the right tube and mark it the right level.I would still do some history on that block and determine were the dipstick is suppose to be and match it up to an original one from that year. With the mods that motor has you don't know whether they re-taped the hole at one stage and used a aftermaket stick.

well thanks for the input i have performed all of the above items you have mentioned.the oil dipstick is located on the drivers side of the engine i have researched info on this particular engine i did find out that there is not much tolerance in how much of a bend that can be used when using the lokar dipstick so i will adjust the bend and see what happens.thanks for the response.

You're on the right track with Lokar dipstick, as there isn't much tolerance as far as bends go. the straighter you can  be the better, but things aren't easy when you have header tubes to contend with. GoodLuck!

thanks for all of the good input went back and revisited the angle of the dipstick tube readjusted to take out the bend and it works great.
