Hello,

Been with passenger Chevy's for some time.  I've always had "third-member" rear ends from 1955 Chevy thru 1964 Chevy.  They were all interexchangeable and now I'm buying a 1964 Chevy c10 pickup and to my surprise, they do NOT use third-member rear ends.

(*)What are the (strength) specks for a stock housing?

(*)Can I swap in/out rear end gears like I  used to do with third-member versions?

It's a v8 with a granny low and wanted to drop in a turbo-350/400 automatic (will have to do some tranny mount work) and then will need to drop the gearing to match the auto tranny.

Any pointers?   Thanks

Hi Wili....No takers huh??

I also have a 64 C10 Stepside, with a granny gear four speed....  Im looking to eventually upgrade the 4 speed to a munchie or saginaw, and wish to put a larger pumpkin in the back that also supports disk brakes.

If I find out anything in my adventures, Ill post it here.

Yeh, I admit I like those pumpkins too. I used to interchange them all the time in the old days. I haven't had to change them lately because I've used Camero rearends with the right ratios or I've upgraded my tire (tyre) sizes to compensate. But I guess with a set of shims and a bit of knowledge of cog ratios you could become a diff junkie. Problem is , that diff oil sure stinks and is nasty to get off anything.

Could swap out the rear end assy with something that has a 3rd member.

Im starting to go the route I went with my 71 Duster. Dropped in an 8 3/4" rear end from a 62 half ton pickup truck.  Works just fine with the 340 leaf springs, especially when I ended up with TWO pumpkins!  3.23 and 3.71 ratios.  The Duster just LOVES the 3.71s....
