Hello,

I am new here.  I just bought a 59 F100.
The last owner put in a 352ci. Motor.  I am trying to get back to the original at least in looks.
Originally it had a straight six.
My father has motor he says is a 302? out of an old Ford dump truck and says it will fit.  It´s a straight six also.  Anyone know anything about this?

Thanks for the help.
John.

You mean a 300, its part of the 240,250 engine group. Older 6's were 215, 223, 262.
That said, there's nothing wrong with a 352 unless of course you need to drive slow, then you better get a 6 they're great for going slow.

You will lose about 200-250 lbs. off the front end if reinstall a 6. There is no reason a 6 has to be slow and you can gain some great mpg figures. Take a look at www.inliners.org and see what can be done with 6 cylinders.

I'll gladly trade you a Ford 6 for your 352, which could be a 352, 390, 427, or 428 because all of these FE motors had 352 cast on the front of the block, and I'm guessing that's how you figured its a 352, right?

90 percent of the trucks built in the 50's and around 65  percent in the '60s came from the factory with 6-cylinder engines. 99.5 percent of the 50's and 60's trucks featured on this website have been converted to V8s. I don't know about you guys, but I think this fact might mean something.

Sure you can hop-up a 6 to run stronger, it still won't touch a V8, and all of the gas-mileage usually goes out the window when you hop a 6 up.

And that ain't all. Price out building a small-block Ford or Chevy V8 and then estimate how much it will cost to build a hot 6-cylinder. It's usually about double.

If anyone wants to challenge Custom Classic Trucks with a 6-cylinder engine build versus CCT's 350-inch Chevy V8 for cost, gas-mileage, and horsepower I'll run the challenge in the pages of CCT and on here in blog updates. Any takers?

One more thing, I'm saying an inline 6 versus a V8 not a V6 like a Chevy 4.3 or a Buick 3.8 etc. those V6 engines do make horsepower, and get gas-mileage.

You mean my Chevy Astro has some potential. Sure it sucks up less fuel, but if I had more time I'll drop in a 350 TPI. Lets see....fuel bill over ego.......sorry ego wins...............six cyclinder over V8.........sorry V8 wins..........You can't replace that exhaust note.............Pee-shooter exhausts don't count.
Hey John here is a chance to get rid of that boat anchor 6 you have, swap the guy.

If I had more than 6 days a month at home I'd accept your challenge, not that I'm an advocate for inline motors but because I like diversity.  The only inline I have running now is a '63 Nova wagon, my '45 is a sbc and 1 '47 is running a flatmotor.

45, Yeah, these days I actually do like inline 6-bangers a lot, there's a lot of nostalgia hearing those old girls run. Back in the day having a 6-banger was a curse. As soon as I could round up a V8, the 6 in my truck was history. It would be fun to do a 6 versus 8 challenge. The offer is still open to anyone who thinks they can build an inline 6 for the same cost of a 350 Chevy, and match the horsepower and gas-mileage. If anyone wants to get serious we'll set some ground rules, and have a little friendly competition!

You got me thinking earlier today and I need to get my truckster project rolling Tell you what I'll do, I will build a 4 banger (Ecotec) using off the shelf products from the Chevy build book which should be around $2000.00 for the engine. The 4 should be enough as the truck will be light and the hp to weight ratio would be pretty good.. Now if we could get a 6 to go in the middle for a 4 vs 6 vs 8 challenge??? My only other problem is time is tight until September as the only time off I take is 10 days at the end of July for the Hot August Nites Swap Meet and Bonneville. But After mid Sept. I'm game.

No deal. we were talking inline 6 versus V8. If you want to throw a 4-banger Ecotec in the mix, then I get to run an electric motor like in the Tesla. 0-60 in 4 seconds, and no gasoline burned... I win!

Can you get an electric motor in a truck to fit in your parameters?  I think you said "If anyone wants to challenge Custom Classic Trucks with a 6-cylinder engine build versus CCT's 350-inch Chevy V8 for cost, gas-mileage, and horsepower I'll run the challenge in the pages of CCT and on here in blog updates. Any takers?" the basis of which is the cost/gas-mileage/horspower.  If you want a build-off there should be a run-off!!  How about the new post in this forum from ca434sbc4?  It's a 6 and a likely candidate and I'm still ready to run a 4 banger against a 6 or 8 Besides everyone needs an excuse to head to SoCal in the springtime.
