I have recently aquired a 1950 ford f1 pickup with a flathead v8 and 4 speed tranny. Bone stock but in fine shape. My plan is this: Install a C-4 automatic behind the flatty. Add power brakes with disks, front and rear, hopefully with E brake. Install a mustang II front end with air bags, Install a 4link with panard bar in the rear with air bags. The list goes on power steering, A/C etc.
What I am needing from you guys who do this or have been in my shoes before is a list of places to look for these parts and or complete kits to get me going. So far I have found bits and pieces here and there, but nothing that I could complete any one section.
Any help is appreciated, Gary

Flathead power steering: Blundell's Speed Shop Orange, CA. Flat-o-matic Gearstar Performance Transmissions. Be warned what you want to do requires a lot more money than going with a small-block Chevy or Ford OHV engine.

Thanks John, I know that it would be easyer to swap the entire drive train out for a modern one, but this truck has the original flathead which the previous owner had completly overhauled less than 4 years and 3000 miles ago. Besides it just sounds so bitchin. I'm not going to be hot rodding in it, I just want a cruiser for weekend trips. Gary

Okay, but if you throw A/C. power steering, and then an automatic tranny behind that itty bitty stock Ford truck flathead motor there isn't going to be any horsepower left to move your truck forward. In addition flatheads have big problems running cool, I'll guarntee you'll overheat the little bugger. Lift weights, and go to Pep-Boys and buy a 12-volt electric fan would be my suggestion.

You are right as rain John, and after just chatting with Jed from Blundell's I will be sure to put in a dual electric fan kit as well as a new aluminum 4 core radiator to keep the beast cool.
Thanks much for the info on Blundell's, John. I had called and talked to Greg about the power steering hassle I was going through and he explained what they had just done. Within minutes of hanging up Jed called me and wanted to know how I had found out about the system they were designing...kinda funny..he thought there must be a spy in his shop until I told him that you had steered me his way.

Great, yeah Chad and Greg are good guys. Rod & Custom magazine turned me on to them. If you still want an automatic like a C4 or an AOD which would really be the ticket, I'd suggest a Gearstar.

Another small problem rose up and smacked me yesterday, Finding a radiator that fits a flathead (dual inlet, dual outlet). I have dropped several e-mails with no reply's yet. Anyone know who still makes them?
John, I opted to buy the tranny and mount kit from Speedway just because of the cost factor. This is a stock flatty so I don't need it built bulletproof like the gearstar unit.

Gary,
That's cool about going the Speedway route, but for anyone that might be interested Gearstar builds what they call a Level 1. It's one of the best kept secrets in the industry, you can buy a Turbo Hydro 350 from Gearstar for $795.00. That includes a high-performance torque converter, custom calibration for the rearend gears you are running, and then the tranny is run a dyno and performance tested. Another thing that makes this an incredible deal is these 350s have the same high-quality USA made parts, and built by the same techs that build $8-10,000 racing transmissions. I know this sounds like an ad big-time, but Gearstar is a company that I belive in and have personally used their trannys in some of my cross-country banzai runs, and they have let me down.

Can anyone provide me with info on a Edmunds dual carb intake that I have for my flatty. On the bottom of the unit it has a 49F stamped into it, otherwise no marking. Is it worth touching re-polishing and useing? Gary

Well, here's an update on the project. Body is off, stripped and primed. Havent had the minor body work done yet but at least it won't rust while it waits. Frame is blasted, primed and the mustang II front end is all tac welded in place. Still trying to figure out how to air bag the rear end. All in all, there is about 20K laying around the garage waiting for me to finish the fab work on the frame so it can be powdercoated and assembled. Still fabing up the rear crossmember for the C-4 tranny kit which has been a singular pain for this ol flatty. Beginning to think the wife was right,,,,buy a boat, go drink an float.

When is a wife ever right? Boats sink, drinking rots your liver, and turds float. I think you should finish your truck.

Hey, Well I finally found a complete 4 link kit for my truck and it's on order. I happened across totoalcostinvolved.com and gave them a call, bingo they had it and lots more for trucks. Very helpful guys on the phone too, they talked me through the whole deal.
So, maybe in a few weeks I will again have a rolling chassis, with air bags all around. Once that is done then I can have the driveline re-done to fit between the C-4 and diff.
Next Phase is to install a new under bed fuel tank. There are several rear cross members under the bed, do they need to be moved or does someone make a tank that will fit without cutting them out and relocating them aft?
PS: Your right john, boats ain't this fun (or bad on the knuckles)

Change to plan B or C is underway. I got a great deal on a 6.0l chevy V8 out of a new Silverado,,,so I bought it. Then I sold my flatty and new C-4 auto to a buddy of mine for his model A project.
My problems are! 1. Where can I go to figure out how to wire in this engine to the truck? 2. Where can I get a fuel tank and pump to feed this pig, I really want to put the tank under bed and I haven't found a source yet.
Anyone with advice on these two areas, please give me some direction.
Thanks

Gary--
Sounds like quite a project! Looks as if you're full-bore into this deal. Be sure to send some pics so we can see this monster you're working on. I have had good luck, when looking for custom engine parts, in working with the guys at Concept One over in Georgia. Give them boys a shout and good luck with the project. Their website is located here at www.c1pulleys.com
