Hi all, I have a 57 chevy (truck of course)small window and i want to chop the top 2 1/2 inchs. I read the book by tex smith, which is great but the way does it ,it also make the rear window smaller. I want to maintain the rear window size. I tought of just making the back cut(horizontal cut) just below the rear window in stead of though the rear window that tex show. Is this a good idea and if so can I still make all the rest of the vertical cuts that tex shows, or will i have to cut some of the top of the roof and section it. thanks all. Mike Allen

Don't sue me if I'm wrong, but I'd say chop-it the usual way, and then cut the window opening up to match the stock rear window glass. It's your truck, but I think the squashed rear window helps to make a chop-top look badass.

Got to thinking and maybe the best way would be to chop out a stock window opening from another truck and graft it in after you chopped your top the usual way. Watch the heat when you are welding it back in. You could end up with a warped mess.

Howdy I'm also in the process of chopping the top of my 1940 chevy 1/2ton. but I'm only going to take out 4 1/2" from the top and only 2 1/2" from the rear window frame. I like the idea of still being able to see whats behind me. Especialy the local law since the truck will also be prostreet.

Cool, chopped is good... and a '40 Chevy is a great truck to start with. Good luck!

Thanks John, Well after the first of the year we started the chop of my 40 chevy. Found that we had to split the top from door to door and down the middle from windshield back. If you check the pictures you'll see were making progress.
