Hey Guys,  This should be an easy one...I have a '56 F100 that still  has the original generator. The generator has failed and the swap to a altenator seems logical for more power output and reliability. Does anyone know what alt. best fits the application for an easy swap and what wiring changes should done? I have the original motor, brackets etc. Currently, power needs are minimal but future electrical upgrades are expected.
Thanks for your help.

If you want to keep it looking original as possible I would use a Powermaster Powergen. They look just like the alt, but put out plenty of power. If it doesn't matter use an internally regulated one-wire setup. The one wire coming out of the alt goes to the battery, and you are done.

Meant to say to say the Powergen looks just like  the stock Ford generator... dang it.

Only problem with the one wire alternator is the charge light becomes redundant but is easily fixed with a volt meter.
A bigger hammer is an option

Thanks John...I'll take a look at those Powermasters. Keeping it original looking is not a big deal right now since a motor swap may be in the future next year.  Bought the truck in June and the generator failed on the drive  home. Been just charging the battery and only driving during the day since then.

If you are doing an engine swap in the near future buy the alternator that suits the new engine best. Its easy to adapt brackets to mount a new style alt to your old Ford. What engine do you have and which engine do you want to swap in?

The original engine is a 272, bored .060 over. Runs good, but will probably go with more HP + EFI engine. Not sure which motor yet! I've been reading the tech articles and readers rides to help with that decision.
Thanks again for your input and great articles.

Seems to me the easyest whould be to get a early altenator with external regulator. it would fit right in with your wire harness. and put out twice as much as the old generator.
