Got a '64 Chevy C-10 running a 283ci motor a 4bbl carb. My carb is shot...so now i can go get a new one...thinking an edelbrock performer intake and 600cfm carb...there are EGR and non-EGR models...are there any advantages/disadvantage to choosing an EGR or non-EGR version for an old truck...motor was recently rebuilt to stock 283 specs.
thanks

David,
Is your 283 stock? If so, a 600CFM carb is too big. Your truck never used an EGR and there's not reason to add one. Get a non EGR. A PCV is all your 283 ever had.

Thanks for the reply John.
My 283 is stock...I just need enuf motor to get around.
I was asking some of my other friends about the 600cfm...seems to be a popular size/choice, but like u said a lil much for my application...my 283 originaly had a 2bbl carb on it...I'm thinking a 500cfm 4bbl with sum headers is all I'll ever need for it...
thanks david

David,
What camshaft was installed when it was rebuilt? That would have been the perfect time to pick up more power, and even a little gas-mileage with a better cam. Here's what I would do, either go to a Holley high-performance 2-barrel, or an Edelbrock 4-barrel. The Edelbrock is an improved version of the Carter AFB which is a great carburetor. Get 500CFM or less and you'll be fine. The Holley 2-barrel is up to 450 I think. Do you have the stock ignition? If so, dump the AC Delco window-type distributor in favor of a Davis DUI. Scour the tech stories on here and you'll See I used one in Ford 302, and my Year One Old School Vortec motor. Do not buy a $69.00 cheapo GM type HEI dist from China they are crap. For exhaust get a set of Speedway Motors cast-iron or stainless steel (depending on your money situation) Ram Horns and run them into a good free-flowing single or dual exhaust. Dynomax makes a great dual-exhaust kit for '60-66 C10 Chevy. If your heads were surfaced when rebuilt that would help your compression and give you a little more power. These are all things that will work with regular gas. Let me know how it goes. Oh yeah, where in the world is your truck? US, Bumfuk, Egypt?

Truck is in Colorado. I just returned to US from a year in Korea. Have bought CCT at Base Exchanges in Korea, Colorado, Texas, Turkey and Afghanistan.
Thanks for all the suggestions John, some of those were along the same lines I was thinking...I will check out the DUI distributor as that is a new one to me.
Once again thanks...

Colorado, okay, you have a high-altitiude situation and you can run a lot of compression. In fact the old Ford flatheads had what they called "Denver heads." Davis Performance Distributors is in Memphis, some of the old issues of CCT have their phone number in a tech story or ad. Talk to Steve Davis on the phone and tell him you need the DUI setup to run in high-altitude. Find out what camshaft you have before you talk to him. The same goes for your carb, you'll need to run leaner jets. There should be a good carb shop up there. Maybe someone can suggest a shop in Colo. Or, hell. you can do it yourself by trail and error, that's how I do it.
