Here the problem. '67 GMC C25 (3/4 ton) P/U has a Dana/Spicer 60 rearend w/Full Floating Axles. I had a bearing problem a few weeks ago. I've cleared that mess up and now I'm putting it back together. For the wheel bearings on the full floater, the Spicer Axle Service manual says the bearings can be lubed either by axle grease or by rear-end gear lube, BUT that is as far as the Spicer Mauual goes. It says "to check vehicle manufacture's specs for specific lube". All I have for Tech data on the '67; is the 67 - 72 Chevy/GMC Haynes Manual. The Haynes Manual says to pack the bearings with grease. One of our local mechanics says that is not right and the bearings are "wet lubed" from the differential. I tried to get additional information on line and to find a "factory" 67 GMC Service manual, but have not had much luck. Anyone have any thought ot info on these rearends?

Haynes might make good undershorts, but I don't think too much of their shop manuals. Your mechanic is right, the rearend is wet-lubed. If you lightly packed the bearings to ensure they had initial lubrication that would be fine. I'm a fan of synthetic lubricants, and for gear oil I would use either Royal Purple, Amsoil, or Mobil 1.

If you lightly pack the bearings should you use the synthecit grease or is regular grease ok?

Curtis,
Any grease that is specified as okay to use on wheel-bearings will work. In a case like this where gear oil does the actual long term lubricating I imagine just about any grease is fine as an assembly lube.

Are there any specific companies that you would recommend?

Stay away from Peter Pan, or Skippy, their grease smells like its made from peanuts or something.

What about that super good FMV imitation of the imitation peanut butter.

Curtis,
Yeah, super chunky is a drag because it only takes a few miles before it grinds into extra creamy... I have no idea Mike is talking about. I think he might be building model cars with the door shut, or something.

More like playing with permanent markers on a white board.
