These pics show where door was cut.Had to pie cut lower frt and rear to match cab pillars. Also shows how we use cut out sections to reinforce when welding back together. This was done the same way on cab back and cab pillars. When cutting make sure you are even on lines so parts will line up and are much easier to weld.A lot less bodywork is needed in the end if this is done right.Last pic in series shows where I will lower windshield opening(green tape).[

Im new at this site.I dont know how to view all the photos.I have a 49 long bed.It has the SRE front end and rear end out of 80 dodge truck.Has a 69 340 with a 727 tranny. Runs and brakes are done.Just body work to do.Need the running boards. Will probably have to make them.Old dodges get any attention in magazines.Im a laid off worker from the Chrysler tranny plant in kokomo. No cash to finish it right now.Been working on it for 6 years.

GOOD WORK ON THE TRUCK, AND THANKS FOR THE WORDS ON THE PILOTHOUSE FORUM.  I WILL HAVE TO POST THE BUILD ON MY 53 TRUCK HERE TOO.  THE CHOP IS A LOT LOWER AND I ALSO LOWERED THE FRONT WINDSHIELD LINE TO MATCH THE SIDE GLASS BETTER. I AM CURRENTLY PUTTING IN A 49 PLYMOUTH DASH IN IT AND THEN I WILL SUICIDE THE DOORS.  IT WILL SIT ON AN S-10 FRAME. CHECK FOR UPCOMING TECH ARTICLES.   BUD

Like what you are doing with your 53.I have 54 I may do a full custom job on. Thought about changing dash(51 Dodge) but with the direction of my build it won't work.I am looking to update the looks of the truck but not to far as to be all out custom. What I am going for is the look as if truck was produced in 49 with current styling.

This set of pics shows where Dakota frame was shortened.I took out 22" to get to original 1949 SWB Dodge pickup specs.Usually we do a diagonal cut but in this case I have built inner bracing(from 22' cut out section),and will eventually box frame in for strength and looks.

The build in looking real fine, I like the look of your workmanship.
Actually I saw one of those for sale at the last Pomona swapmeet, it was a shortbed stepside in real nice shape, it even had a HEMI in it. I thought it would make a great project. But get this it was only $1000. I personally thought it was the deal of the show.
If I didn't have so many projects I would definitely had grapped it. I'm sure I could still contact the guy, he is in the area.
Anyway good to see the truck moving along, unlike my projects.
