I plan on chopping the top of my '49 chevy truck. After I chop the top, how do I make all the windows fit the contour of the chopped roofline? Is the a way to make a template that I can send to a glass company or can I order new original glass then modify them to fit? Any imfo. is greatly appreciated as this will be a topic in the distant future that will be my decision as "to chop or not to chop, that is the question!"
This would be an excellent topic for a future magazine article! (hint, hint!)

Chopping is a whole new life! I removed my doors and let the torch fly. I pivoted the A pillar and tilted my whole windshield over. This is called the NASCAR cut. I lowered the roof to fit the windshield and back (B pillars) of the cab. I cut out the entire rear window frame. After I had the roof the way I wanted it (slightly tilted forward) I put the rear glass back in (bottom of glass matching the doors) I then removed the window frames of the doors, cut them apart, and re-mitered them to match the roof. Re-used the window channels by making a small triangle plate to support the window channel for one piece side class and mounted the sport side mirrows. Made a glass template out of cardboard then 1/4 plywood and inserted into tracks and window regulators. Took plywood template to glass company and they made me tinted saftey glass side windows. Yours you can use two piece flat glass windshield and have that custom made as it did my side windows by just dropping your roof line straight down. That will keep your A pillars the same. Chopping the roof is one thing, but there is way more to it than that!!! Next you have to lower your seat so you have some head room. Then you have to lower (drop down) your steering column. That means you have to shorten the steering column to give you some breathing room. Take roof cutting advice only from someone that has done it!!! Good luck with your project. ps. Are you going to pancake your hood and lower the cab?

I didnt plan on lowering the cab or pancakin' the hood. So far Im saving some money to replace the lower portion of the cab, like the cab corners, rocker panels, kick panels, and several other parts of the floor also. How would I go about doing all this? Where do I start first? I will be replacing the lower section where the bottom door hinge is located. Should I start at one corner and work my way around?
On the dash board Ive shaved the speaker hole the ash tray hole and the glove box. Im going to make the chevy symbol out of 1/4 inch plate and weld it to the dash to give it that custom touch. Then Ill smooth out the edges to make it look like it was molded into the dash. Im going to do the same on the sides of the hood. Thats as far as Ive gotten so far.

Use replacement panels and rocker panels and make sure they mate up with the door. If your door hinge is suspect, then replace it first so you will have a firm foundation when doing the rockers and corners.

Is there a good quality parts catalog that you would suggest as far as being the same thickness as the original body parts? I had planned on ordering from Classic Parts. Ill be ordering from them in the next week or two. Do you know how their parts rate? Are they as the original body replacements or are they cheap thin stuff? Just wondering!

Haven't heard of anyone ranting about them on the forums so its most likely a safe bet. Just don't quote me on it.

That's not a complete company name. Who are you talking about?

I think all the bottom work should be done first. So when you chop the top everything will stay put and not worp out of wack when you cut top.
