My '66 short Fleet has a factory spare tire mounted on the driver's side inside the bed, the same as a stepside side-mount. If you go to a rear tank you can do it like this, or just lay your spare down on the floor of the bed. A couple of my trucks don't have a spare, If I get a flat it looks like the girlfriend will be getting phone call to please bring me a spare.

This is an easy one, AAA.
They tow up to a hundred miles five times a year. if you get a flat more than that . . . well then your problems have advanced to a much more sever state of emergency, meaning you have just plain bad luck! If that becomes the case I'd stay indoors during a thunderstorm.
You could also just throw the spare in the bed when you drive it, and just take it out if you want to show the bed off
