Has anyone used a mid 80s chevy s-10 frame for thier 49 chevy truck? What issues would I have to deal with if I swap out the original frame?

Yep, people make this swap all the time. It's an easy enough job for a good fabricator to handle. If you cant' weld, and figure out how to relocate cab and bed mounts etc. you better find someone that can.

I can weld fairly good. I just wanted to know what issues, like cutting the inner fenders to fit the suspension or if the cab and bed needed to be lifted to clear the hump in the frame over the axle, etc?

If you can weld you've got half the problem solved. I've seen guys use S-10 frames, but I didn't pay very close attention. If no one on here can fill you in, try one of the pure Chevy sites, and maybe one of those guys can help you.
I can't take the time away from the tech stories, etc. I'm writing and shooting for my magazine, plus generate exclusive new content for this website to go into details, but good luck and keep us posted on your progress.

Sticks, look on the H.A.M.B, there has been a fair amount of info on this swap and some pretty good datails too. Kits are available of AD engineering but the price is steep. There is even a guy from Canada who has put a '49 Fleetline on an S-10 chasiss. Right off I have gathered that you need to use the long box regular cab, its nearly the perfect length and should require no extra length or shortening. Std cab long box= 118" Std cab short box = 108" Ext cab short box = 123" Blazer 4 dr = 107" Blazer 2 dr = 100" They say you should use a 4x4 rear end to get 4" more width.
Check out the site for more info and problems.

inuke,
That's a lot of good info. thanks for laying it on us.
I'm not sure about a 4x4 S10 having a 4-inch wider track , but anything is possible.

The 4x4 rear end is 4 inches shorter then 2x4 rear end.

The 4x4 S-10 is wider in wheel base demensions. The swap for a 4x4 chassis will work if a truck body from a dually or greater than 1 ton vehicle is used. The fenders on a duece and a half truck are 2 inches wider on each side and the hood and grill are also larger. The 4x4 rear end is a better utility because the 4x4s have posi-traction. If you are using a 4x4 chassis to build off of and your rear tires don't fit, just buy 3" wider fender or build to accept your size of tire. The fender meets the bed at a flat surface, so that makes for easy welding. No complex curves to consider. I'm fabricating a truck off a dually body. I found this truck in a field and bought it for too high of a price. The hight of the truck cab helped to keep the moisture from rusting the body. Also I like the idea of a wider stance.

Blast, Yeah tell me about paying too high a price for a truck. I buy high, and sell low it seems like all the time.

I DID A53 GMC THE PROBLEMS I HAD WAS : THE EXHUAST MAINFOLDS YOU WILL HAVE TO USE 305 STOCK ONES IF YOU DONT USE HEADERS. AND THE WHEELS WILL SET UP UNDER THE TRUCK. I USED A 2 WD FRAME TO GET THEM TO LOOK RIGHT YOU WILL HAVE TO USE WHEEL SPACERS.OUTSIDE OF THIS YOU SHOULD NOT HAVE ANY OTHER PROBLEMS. SORRY THAT IS MY 2 CENTS WORTH
